What We Do
Catherine’s greatest contribution to the Church is not only the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy but also the spirituality that enlivened it - a fresh and fertile blending of the contemplative spirit and the compassionate heart.
Today, our call is about Service to those in need.
Today, we are experiencing breakdown in our society:
- Loss of Faith
- Breakdown in family life
- Materialism
- Addictions of every kind
- Loneliness and Isolation
- Violence
- Homelessness
- Sexual Abuse and trafficking
In her time, Catherine McAuley tried to redress injustices, whether spiritual, material, social or cultural. She would urge us to do the same. The need for mercy and compassion is more than evident today and we continue to seek new and creative ways of expressing it together.
“Our rich heritage as Sisters of Mercy centred in Jesus Christ impels us … to use our collective resources to reach out, embrace and be embraced by a suffering world, so that all may have life to the full.”
(MIJN Mission Statement 2001).
Today, Sisters of Mercy are as much in demand to work with the poor and powerless in our society. We are committed to be mercy to all with a preferential option for the most vulnerable in society.
We are called to respond to the needs of our world. We reach out to people who are:
- Spiritually poor and have lost a meaning for living
- Vulnerable and are crying out for help - spiritual and material
“She (Catherine) taught the needy how to regulate their lives so that they would be holy as well as happy.”

We commit ourselves to:
- Deeper understanding of the global social, economic, political and cultural structures which oppress peoples, nations and earth which sustain all
- Reflective and Spiritual solidarity among ourselves and with those whose voices are repressed
- Collaborative action
